Common overvoltage protection components or devices include
lightning arresters, varistors, and lightning arresters. In the
field of communication power supply, in order to prevent the
lightning high voltage from causing great damage to it, a varistor
is usually arranged to protect against overvoltage. When a
momentary high voltage generated by lightning is applied across the
varistor, the varistor resistance becomes infinitely small, causing
the varistor to conduct and introduce a large current generated by
the lightning into the ground, thereby protecting the power supply
device from lightning damage. On the power system side, the
lightning protection device is usually used to protect the AC and
DC from overvoltage.
